Kutna Hora and the Ossuary
The former mining town of Kutna Hora is located approximately one hours drive northeast of Prague. Due to the large finds of silver in the 12th and 13th century, the town prospered throughout the ages and beautiful sights, such as the cathedral of St. Barbara or the Italian Court, were built. After you are picked up at your hotel, we drive through the country side to Kutná Hora. Here you visit the mentioned gothic cathedral of St. Barbara, the patron of miners, started in 1388, then continue to the Italian Court where the royal mint was situated and the “Prague Groschen”, a coin widely accepted throughout Europe, was minted. Also the coin “the Taler” was minted here which later gave the ”dollar” it’s name. After lunch (on your own but suggestions will be made) we continue to a nearby village of Sedlec which offers the famous “Ossuary”, a church decorated with the bones of 40,000 people, victims of the 30 year war (1618-1648) as well as the “black death”, the bubonic plague. The decorations give the church a very “unusual” flair as well as honor the lives of the deceased. Kutna Hora is one of UNESCO World Heritage sights.
