Terezin is a small town located approximately a 45 minute drive north of Prague. It was built as a fortress to house soldiers and protect Praguefrom invasions from the north. It was never used as such however its fortified walls and a garrison area made it a grimly suitable location for a concentration camp. During the Nazi occupation of the Czech part of Czechoslovakiain World War II, the Small Fortress of Terezin was turned into a Gestapo prison and the Great Fort - the town of Terezin- a Jewish ghetto and a transit station to death camps in the east such as Auschwitzin Poland. Many people died here due to malnutrition, disease and overwork. For others it was an interim station before they were sent on to an extermination camp. Its' sad and cruel history is preserved in this memorial today. We drive out to the town and visit the Museum, where besides being able to read about the history and see the photographs, we will see a film about the activities there. We also visit the crematorium and the actual Small Fortress where the prisoners were held, tortured and often executed. We go into the cells, the hospital, the grounds and more.

5. day – PragueCesky KrumlovPrague

Breakfast is in the hotel

This small picturesque city is situated on the banks of the Vltava River(Moldau) in Southern Bohemia and is about a 2 hour drive from Prague. The town was built around a 13th century castle with gothic, renaissance and baroque elements. It is an outstanding example of a small central European medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact thanks to its peaceful evolution over more than five centuries. After you leave Prague, you are driven south to the town of Český Krumlov. Our walking tour of the town includes a tour of the Castle that used to belong to the rich and influential Rosenberg family where we visit the still beautifully furnished interior rooms. You may even see the ghost of the “White Lady” that supposedly still haunts these walls! After an extensive visit , you can have lunch in the city center.  After lunch you have ample time to stroll around and shop for handmade items, crystal, antiques or the many art objects offered.  In the early afternoon we drive back to Prague. Český Krumlov is one of UNESCO World Heritage sights.

6. day – PragueKarlovy VaryPrague

Breakfast is in the hotel.

Karlovy Vary, better known by its German name, Karlsbad, is the most famous Bohemian spa. It was named for the Bohemian king and German and Holy Roman emperor Charles (Karl) IV who allegedly found the springs in 1358 during a hunting expedition. In the 19th century, royalty came here from all over Europefor treatment. The city is located about a 2 hours scenic drive west of Prague. On arrival in Karlovy Vary, your guide takes you on a walk along the “Park Colonnade” and the river “Tepla”. There are over 60 mineral springs ranging from 10oC to 73.6oC (50oF - 165oF). 13 of these springs are located along our route and you can sample them all, if you like. Depending on your level of walking ability, you can take a hike up the mountain to spectacular views of the city, visit the beautiful Russian Orthodox Church of Peter and Paul, the baroque churchof St. Maria Magdalene and more. Have lunch in one of the many restaurants right on the Tepla River.

7. day – PragueKonopiste CastlePrague (Karlstejn can be substituted.)

Breakfast is in the hotel.

The origins of this medieval castle are shrouded in mystery, however, it is generally believed that it was first built in the 14th century. It has gone through countless renovations with the last one being the most extensive. It was Archduke Ferdinand d’Este, the successor to the Hapsburg throne, that gave it this last makeover. Until his assassination in Sarajevoon 28th of June, 1914, which is generally seen as the catalyst that started WWI, he lived here with his lovely wife Sophie and their children. The castle has become a museum for the art object that he and his family collected over centuries. The castle is located approximately one hours drive south of Praguein a pristine, woody area, near the town of Benešov. During your tour you will see antique furnishings, paintings, tapestry, hunting trophies and much more. The castle bears are also waiting for your visit.

8. day – Departure transfer
