This castle, more appropriately called a “Chateau”, is unique in being close to Prague, open in the winter and also on Mondays!
After your guide, with your requested size vehicle, picks you up at your hotel, you travel north from Prague to a little town called Sychrov. The drive takes about 1 hour. Once there, a tour of the castle interior as well as the park and gardens is conducted with an English speaking castle guide.
The chateau has a wonderful collection of 18th and 19th century furniture, paintings, object of art and especially many objects carved out of wood by a famous wood carver, Petr Busek. He worked at the castle for over 30 years and gave it’s interior beautiful pieces of art as well as functional objects such as staircases, furniture pieces and much more.
The history of the castle goes back to the 15th century when this area was owned by the Czech kings. In 1690 a large, stone baroque mansion was built by the knight family “Lamott from Frintropp”. It was later owned by the Wallenstein family, decendants of the famous general Wallenstein of the 30 year war, and eventually was purchased by the counts of Rohan, a French aristocratic family. The Rohans fled France after the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, thus escaping the faith of Luis the 16th, the guillotine. Eventually, the Rohans’ were called back to France but remained in Bohemia by choice, having found their new home. Sychrov was their main residence and was grandiosely refurbished by the most famous of the Rohans, Kamil Josef Idesbald Filip Rohan. Kamil had not only paid attention to the interior of the castle. His parks and gardens also flourished under his care.
After WWII, the castle became the property of Czechoslovakia and at first housed the collection of confiscated objects. However in 1950, the castle was partially opened to the public. Since the 1990ties, the castle has undergone a major restoration of the interior, the gardens and parks, most of which is complete and reflects it’s most beautiful period, second half of the 19th century.
